I’ve always been acutely aware of my blood sugar levels. If I go too long between meals, I feel my blood sugar drop and almost without thinking I reach for a sugary treat to boost them. And if I try to ignore my cravings, they just get stronger and stronger until I cave and nibble on chocolate.
It literally feels like my body is screaming out for sugar… So, why is it so bad for our health? Surely if my body makes me crave something it’s for a good reason?
Well, yes… and no.
It turns out that when my blood sugar levels are out of balance, my body is using sugars instead of fats as a fuel source. So instead of maintaining a nice stable blood sugar level, my body keeps having sugar spikes and then lows. And what happens in those lows? I crave and consume more sugar, which repeats the cycle and stresses the body.
When the body is under stress it releases cortisol, the flight or fight hormone. This is a problem because our bodies are not made to be in a constant state of fight or flight.
In this high-stress state, our other normal bodily functions are impaired, including hormone functioning. This causes cortisol levels to rise and sex hormones to be depleted. This is often the beginning of Adrenal Fatigue or Estrogen and Progesterone imbalances.
Long story short… consuming large amounts of sugar triggers unbalanced blood sugar levels, stress, and sex hormone imbalances, which results in low energy, brain fog & weight gain.
Those yummy sugary treats might taste great and give our bodies a short burst of energy… but unfortunately the good doesn’t outweigh the bad.
